Lincolnshire National News: RyanAir's sexist adverts banned after complaints

Two of RyanAir's new newspaper adverts have been banned after complaints from readers that they were sexist and objectified women.

The advertising standards authority (ASA), which received 17 complaints said that the adverts were likely to cause a great deal of offence to a lot of members of the public.

The adverts showed female crew members that had volunteered to take part in bra's and pants with the headline above "Red Hot Fares & Crew! One way from £9.99".

The airline commented saying that since the crew members have volunteered it could not be seen to objectify women, the adverts also promoted its charity calendar and used images that were taken directly from it.

The adverts have featured in The Guardian, The Independent and also The Daily Telegraph.

RyanAir commented "because similar images of women and men often featured in the same media, the ads could not be deemed offensive or unsuitable for public display".

The ASA on the other hand found the women's appearance, stance and gaze - together with the headline - would be seen as linking female cabin crew with sexually suggestive behaviour and breached the advertising practice code.

"We considered that the ads were likely to cause widespread offence, when displayed in a national newspaper," the ASA said.
The advertising watchdog said the adverts must not appear again.
